Carer Gateway
The main support service for unpaid carers in Australia.
Carer Gateway is the Australian Government service that connects unpaid carers to free support — counselling, peer groups, coaching, respite, and emergency help. It's underused. Use it.
Free counselling
Phone, video or in-person counselling sessions with a qualified counsellor who specialises in carer wellbeing. No diagnosis required. No referral required. Free.
Peer support groups
Online and in-person groups for carers — including specific groups for carers of people with dementia, mental illness, or a child with disability. For many, the most powerful thing is being in a room with people who get it.
Carer coaching
A short series of structured one-on-one sessions to help you build skills around things like setting boundaries, communicating with health professionals, or handling difficult behaviours. Free.
Online resources and self-guided courses
For the times you can't pick up the phone — short courses and resources you can read or do at your own pace, at carergateway.gov.au.
